School is cool

August 27, 2008 · 23 Comments

Working in the same University, where you studied before, could be very haunting to your senses. True, not always (it could be fun too), but it certainly is during the end of August and early September when the whole University is bursting with joy and celebration of incoming students. Hordes of different groups of new students and cheerleaders, comprising beautiful young girls, accost you at every corner with their exuberance and painfully remind you of times, not so long ago, when you were among one of those. It also reminds you, painfully again, that how much more you could have enjoyed being in that position then, had you understood the importance of those moments and not wasted those precious moments fretting over inconsequential trivialities of life. And, no matter how much you try to convince yourself that you are still a part of that celebration of student life, the sad truth is that you are not. Certain things have right charm at right time only. So, I plead with all of you out there, who are still in that environment, to fully enjoy those moments while you are in school and not give a damn to anything else….because those moments are surely not going to come again!

The picture below was clicked by me and captures the McGill campus around the main ground where orientations and celebrations for the new students are going on this week.

Singh is King

I have finally made some changes to this blog including organizing it, adding some new stuff and deleting some of the earlier posts which I felt were unnecessary and irrelevant in the present context.

I started blogging a while back for reasons which were entirely personal. With time, this blog evolved into bit more than that. Now, I think, it’s time to make it into something which hopefully will be worth the time spent on it. It’s also time to sum up some of the issues related to blogging and my take on them.

I personally believe that one should write about things only when one could bring something interesting to the table in terms of either good knowledge of the subject matter, or a different point of view or some very personal experience which adds value to readers’ knowledge. Writing half baked posts or boring day to day details or beaten to death viewpoints, all merely for the sake of self expression is , in my opinion, waste of time both for the writer and the readers. It’s better to keep a personal diary instead. Having said that, I do realize that most of us, including me, sometimes are/will be guilty of writing sloppy posts or narcissist posts.

Now, coming back to the question, why I blog? Let me be very honest here. I hardly know about most of the things. Even for the things I should know, my knowledge is very limited and peripheral. Then, what am I doing here? Well, even though I dont know much, I’am very curious and have lots of interests. I believe that I can use blogging to pursue some of those interests in a structured way and also use my blog as a file to record things. So, different pages and categories you see here serve that purpose. I also blog sometimes to write about things which personally touch me the most even if I may not have much knowledge about them; Then, blogging also introduces me to all of you amazing people through your blogs and your comments. It’s been great fun knowing all of you and I hope to keep meeting interesting people through blogging.

Discussion through your comments on my posts enriches the blogging experience. But, I can only hope rather than demand that readers of this blog share some of mine interests/concerns and will find something interesting to visit this blog regularly and share their opinions. At the same time, I don’t blog only to get comments to my posts or to have certain number of hits (ofcourse that wont hurt and besides who doesnt like to be famous, but that’s not the sole purpose). So, it’s fine if you don’t find a particular post worthy of any comment or certain topic not of your interest to read further. You are not obliged for anything. Likewise, I dont leave comments on other people’s blog just for the sake of declaring that I exist and please visit my blog too. I comment only if I have to say something relevant, funny (assuming the other person can take it) or sometimes I just comment to appreciate a good post. The point is, I dont think that you can make your blog successful by posting comments on as many different blogs as possible, so that all those bloggers visit your blog and comment too. It might work in the short run but wont work for long simply because after all how many bloggers can you visit on a regular basis just to keep your blog going.

Recently, I got some feelers (in private from few blogger acquaintances) that why I dont welcome bloggers to my blog after they comment for the first time on my blog. All I have to say here is that rather than just welcoming you to my blog, I welcome you to my heart. Ok, this sounded cheesy, but Iam serious. I also keep getting feelers regarding my habit of sometimes not acknowledging your comments or not commenting further to your comments on my posts. Again, no offense please. I simply intend to respect both yours and mine time. If there is nothing pertinent to add further, I just leave it to that. I can assure you that not replying doesnt mean that I dont agree with you or that your comment is stupid or that I dont like you commenting. I take each comment very seriously and appreciate it, without necessarily saying it all the time. Folks, the point here is that I treat everybody the same and as grown up adults. Iam not here to belittle anybody. Infact, I respect your intelligence by not assuming you guys to be so emotionally vulnerable that you will get offended by mere informality. Your comments mean a lot to me. I have learnt a lot from your comments and I hope to keep learning more.

I dont mind sharp comments or heated arguments here as long as they dont get personal to anybody. As Roop wrote in her blog the other day, argue the opinion, not the person.

Take it easy guys and hope to see you around.

P.S.: I have updated About me page and added four other pages, all of which you can see as different tabs above. I hope you find these pages interesting and have something to contribute. I will be updating these pages every time I write a new post relating to one of those topics. I have also categorized all of my posts into different categories for better organization of posts (see the category widget on left side). The reason I havent added more widgets than the existing ones is because I dont want to clutter my blog with too many widgets and stuff. I prefer to keep it neat and easy to navigate. But, in case some of you feel that this blog with it’s present content and scope can still be better organized by adding some more widgets or sub pages etc, I invite comments/suggestions. Last, but certainly not the least, I would like to thank all of you in either helping (Nita, Reema, Suda) or offering to help me in making all these changes and additions. Special thanks to Roop who was so patient with me (Yes, I was very picky) while helping me for certain important things.

Blog status

August 7, 2008 · 13 Comments

Friends, in case some of you are wondering that why it’s taking me so long to update my blog and stuff, my answer is that whatever little time I got to work on this and to add new things was surely not enough. I need much more time to write things and to organize stuff here than what I anticipated. Hopefully, I will be back with all new stuff added and with more organized blog before this week ends. I just hope that the improved version is worth the wait, in case anybody is waiting :) . Thanks a lot for your wishes.
