Life on Mars

January 26, 2008 · 13 Comments

Ever since man invented telescope, he is obsessed with finding evidence of life elsewhere. I remember as a school kid I was obsessed with Astronomy and wanted to become an Astronomer. Later, more baser desires took over and that explorer in me took a back seat. But, I always remained interested in that world outside our earth. Even now, it’s hard to believe for me that we are the only living beings in this entire Universe; It just doesn’t seem right….I know we dont have any concrete scientific evidence yet, but still…..

Since Mars is similar to Earth in many ways, it’s the most studied and analyzed planet to find evidence of life. Every now and then, there is a speculation about it. The most recent one is about this picture of a woman like figure on Mars taken by Nasa spacecraft Spirit

Although, as always, NASA scientists have dismissed it as an unsual shape of rock formed by bizarre Martian winds; Some scientists/researchers however disagree.

Whether or not there is/was any life in Mars is ofcourse very debatable, but Iam pretty convinced that there is much more to Mars than what we know from proved scientific evidence.

Because the Martian atmospheric pressure is so low and the temperatures are so extreme, it is not possible for liquid water to exist on the planet today. If any water managed to make its way to the surface, it would immediately boil away, or vaporize. However, scientists believe that was not always the case. Photographs of Mars have clearly shown deep gullies, channels, long twisting valleys, and other surface indentations that are likely the remains of ancient riverbeds, ponds, lakes, or even vast oceans. After analyzing evidence gathered by spacecraft, scientists are now certain that water was once abundant on Mars.

Even though Mars is barren and desertlike today, the knowledge that water once ran freely across the planet opens up an intriguing possibility: that some form of life once existed there. Robert Zubrin explains why he is one of the scientists who subscribes to that theory:

“All creatures great and small surviving in extreme environments have one thing in common: their environment includes a source of water, however meager. The fact that Mars shows a remarkable amount of evidence of both surface and subsurface water in its distant past argues for the possibility of life in the past or perhaps even now in an unexpected “Garden of Eden.” “

For years there has been controversy over the famous ” mars rock” discovered in Antarctica which came from Mars and showed some evidence of past microbial life which existed in mars 4 billion years ago.

So, there was water in Mars in the past..we also have some vague evidence regarding microbial life in the past. Now combine all this with the fact that Mars is older than earth. What do we get???

Isnt it possible that life existed in Mars at one point of time and then it came full circle ( probably they destroyed themselves after a nuclear war over water !!!) or may be what happened was that a very large asteroid hit it & the impact was so catastrophic that it destroyed everything. And then, may be the asteroid , after the impact, broke up into 2 large pieces and bounced out into space again becoming the so called 2 moons of Mars. According to the scientists, it is about the same time when life came to Earth. Bingo!!!

So, probably those microorganisms were the only survivors which could eventually reach Earth and start the whole cycle of life again; Can Mars provide us with a peep into our past and alter our future???

The bottom line is, dig deeper into Mars!!!!

Here is a very nice article if you wanna read more about it.

Season of reunions & Destiny

January 18, 2008 · 7 Comments

It seems like it’s a season of reunions; In the last 20-30 days, I have got in touch with as much as four friends from school/college days with whom I had lost touch since quite some time ( I got in touch with one school mate after 15 years !!). It happened primarily through Orkut. I think Internet has finally proved that ” it’s a small world”.

Also, we are living in a world where information has exploded around us and we are still getting in terms with it. It is certainly changing the way we connect with each other. Gone are the days when it took ages to know what a person is doing, where he is living, what’s his lifestyle, who are his friends, what he thinks of certain things, what kind of songs he listens to and so on…; One glance at friend’s ( or even stranger’s) profile or his wall posts, and you know things which would have otherwise taken years to know……and this is just one of the very basic examples of access to information we have now..

Is this good or bad?? I think that in the short run, one might be uncomfortable with the whole idea of one’s privacy being threatened, but, in the long run, more transparent the world is, better it is for society’s evolution. All great discoveries and inventions have been made by collective efforts-in terms of access to knowledge and information- even though all great minds who were primarily responsible for these feats -which every time took humanity one step further – may on surface had seemed very individualistic. It took centuries before we found vaccines for small pox and other such diseases…but once knowledge started flowing faster , ten times more progress happened in mere 40-50 years. And , that was when flow of information was still much limited than what we have right now. Now, access to information is so fast and explosive that synergies are created every moment. Yes, we are indeed living in a period where too much information, knowledge and opinions have created clutter around us ( everybody has enough information and opinions, but not necessarily wisdom)..but Iam positive that this is similar to the proverbial extreme darkness just before sunshine. Iam optimistic that major breakthroughs in medical science and all other fields, which will take us many steps up in the ladder of evolution, are just around the corner.

Coming back to my reunions with old friends; One of the junior college friend I met after many years made me aware of whereabouts of some of the common friends we used to have during that time. He told me about this guy X who is a multimillionaire now!!! How come?

Well, Mr X is one percent stakeholder in largest online gaming company, “partygaming” thus making him worth more than one hundred million dollars..which most likely makes him richer than both Shah Rukh Khan and Sachin Tendulkar. He was not the best of my friends, but I remember him quite well….Since we lived in the same hostel and had common set of friends, we used to hang out together . He was one of those nerdy types, but nothing extraordinary u see. I mean , yes, he did his engineering from a good college (not IIT though) and then went to do his MBA from IIM Calcutta..but, there were quite a few of his types-or even better-in our college itself.

If you are living in North America and by the age of 60, you have one million dollars in your bank, that’s considered quite a successful life. And, this guy has made 100 times more than that by the age of 30 itself. Iam not saying that he is not smart enough for this achievement..he probably is..but, what about many many others who are as smart as him or even more, but will never achieve success of this magnitude no matter how hard they work or how smart decisions they make in their lives. But, in Mr X’s case, just one step ( a decision which may not have even looked smart at that time) by him- leaving his job at Infosys to join this start up- changed the whole course of his life. If this is not destiny what else is it??

No matter how much I want to downplay the role of destiny in my own life and would like to believe that we ourselves are the masters of our destinies, examples like these shout at me saying that dude, destiny does play a role and that 2+2 does not equal to 4 all the times!!!

Finding love/mate through matrimonial sites

January 14, 2008 · 38 Comments

I know many people who use/have used matrimonial web sites to find life partners; Some have been successful and some not. Well, that’s not the point here.

I just find the whole concept of finding husbands/wives through these channels very weird. Is finding a life partner similar to finding a job? Because, the way it works is that guy/girl first matches the coordinates with prospective profiles before he/she decides to communicate…age, religion, caste, height, education and so on…After that, people start communicating through emails/phone calls..and then, if they really start feeling that he/she might be the one, they meet in real…and so on…….. Isnt the whole modus-operandi works like a job search???

But is that how love should happen between two people??? Isnt it a very unnatural and contrived way to go about love/marriage??? I mean the whole foundation of this exercise is so unromantic and bland ; Just imagine two people talking/meeting for the first time and the sole intention of both parties is to judge if the guy/girl on the opposite end will make for a suitable partner…For me, that expectation itself will kill any chance of genuine chemistry developing between the two…

I find it gross; But, I wonder if many of those who go for this route have any other option.
